Mavrodaphne of Patras (P.D.O.) is one of the most famous and tasteful Greek wines. It is a red sweet wine, produced from grapes grown in the northwestern region of Achaia. Characteristic of this variety is that the longer it ages the more its merits emerge. It accompanies spicy cheeses, fruits and sweets.
Grape Varieties: 60% Mavrodaphne & 40% Black Corinthian
Characteristics: Fruity and sweet, with a good cut to the dark cherry, roasted plum and dried berry flavors. Asian spice and milk chocolate notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2016. Aged 2 years in French Oak.
The NV MAVRODAPHNE OF PATRAS is a rather sweet iteration of Mavrodaphne, soft, gentle and delicious, with very tasty fruit and that rush of sugar. This inexpensive bargain is not, of course, a mature, intense Mavrodaphne, but it shows beautifully for its style and youth. With time and air, the sugar integrates and it shows more brightness and a little character while remaining quite delicious and aromatic. Drink it somewhat cool, around 60F; feel free to experiment. Although sometimes called ?ort like,?note that it is only 15% alcohol. Note: This is technically a non-vintage wine. The particular bottling reviewed has a blue strip under the capsule with a ?11.?These last a good while, depending on how you like them, but this easy, young style is not one principally aimed at aging. Note that it also comes with a synthetic cork. Drink now-2022.
